Sapphire House

A contemporary two-storey extension to a family home in North Cambridge.

MOOi were approached by the owners of this property to provide more space at ground floor for their young family and two additional bedrooms; a guest room for elderly relatives at ground floor and a new master bedroom suite at first floor.

The solution rationalises and zones areas at ground floor and improves the relationship and flow between the various spaces. The open plan kitchen / dining / snug area at the rear becomes the main focus of the home, whilst other more functional areas such as the Utility and Cloakroom have been internalised and positioned at the side of the property, not only for the practicalities of services / drainage, but also to maintain and improve secondary access into property.
At first floor the existing layout was reconfigured to provide access to a fourth bedroom at the rear, featuring a vaulted ceiling, en-suite and a walk in wardrobe with bespoke joinery.

Externally the proposals seek to rationalise and combine the rear additions into a singular modest, yet contemporary gesture, finished in Sapphire blue render at ground floor and open jointed cedar cladding at first floor.

Client Feedback:

‘We thought very carefully about who to choose as an architect. We were planning a large renovation to our house in central Cambridge which would take just under a year. Having had no experience with this before and with a very specific budget with little margin for errors we met several architects before meeting with MOOi. The first time we met they was a revelation. They looked though our house and came up with grand ideas that we would never have imagined. Choosing them was an easy decision. They worked with us throughout the entire process from designs to surveys, to planning applications and changes, to tenders for builders. We then chose MOOi to project manage and met them weekly on site with many phone calls and emails in between. We moved back home and our house is transformed beyond our wildest dreams into an amazing living space for our entire family. We have no hesitation in recommending MOOi.’
