Colour Pop House

A Traditional, Edwardian villa just a few miles from the historic city centre, this family home in Cambridge was renovated and transformed for 21st century living.

In need of modernisation the owners instructed MOOi Architecture and The Daniels Group to reimagine the kitchen and dining areas, develop the outdoor entertaining space and modernise the bathrooms, transforming it into the stunning, colour filled family home it is today.

The extension with its dynamic form features black render and a black zinc roof. Slimline, external doors slide away to expose the cantilevered corner, providing a flexible family entertaining space.

Inside the large, open-plan contemporary kitchen features bespoke, linoleum faced, midnight blue, handleless tall cabinetry and a rough sawn oak central island with terrazzo top. The colour “pop” continues with vibrant daffodil yellow featuring on the glass splashback, rebated into the oak splayed reveal.

The kitchen delivers on both form and function by incorporating clever design to conceal functional features and storage, for a polished and uncluttered appearance.

Leading off the kitchen, the family living space with feature frameless oriel window lined in oak, offers a playful reading nook often occupied by a small family member.

Smart Home systems link the home automation, heating and lighting with the AV surround sound system, incorporating integrated ceiling speakers throughout and retractable projector and screen for family film screenings.

The functional utility space is anything but utilitarian with vibrant daffodil yellow again featuring on the melamine faced, birch faced plywood carcassing with exposed shelf detailing, injecting a refreshing accent of colour into the space.

The family bathroom remodel delivered a daring and bold transformation of the existing space. The feature flamingo wallpaper is a quirky and playful, the hue from the flamingos reflected in the custom painted, fuchsia pink roll-top bath.

The wall of mirror creates depth in the space, lime green floor tiles are both family functional and fun and brushed bronze bathroom fittings complete the space.

Client Feedback:

‘Having previously had work done that we were disappointed with, we spent some time researching architects and were prepared to wait to get the right one. MOOi supported us from start to finish and the end result far exceeded our expectations.

From preparing everything for planning and building control, working seamlessly with our builder, and coming up with great designs, to giving honest (but tactful) feedback and suggestions on our ideas, there hasn’t been an aspect of this project that MOOi hasn’t been involved with. The initial scope to extend and renovate the kitchen expanded to include bathrooms and a new patio, and we have been delighted with our new spaces.

It was great to have someone so knowledgeable to guide us. Their suggestions and ideas were fantastic and we were able to add our own ideas to this. This means that we’ve got a beautiful, but highly personalised space that is absolutely perfect for our family and enhances our life daily. We were able to be braver and more ambitious, and are very thankful that MOOi encouraged us to be so.’
