MOOi have recently obtained planning approval to substantially extend and reconfigure a large detached property within the Conservation Area of Newnham, Cambridge.
The original brief was to create a new generous family garden room, which had a strong connection with the garden and lots of natural light. The scheme not only provides a new contemporary extension which opens up onto a southern facing terrace, but it also resolves a fundamental issue with the layout of the existing property, which has been resolved by repositioning the stair to maximise and improve the usable space both at ground and first floor levels.
The extension itself seeks to compliment the existing property with it’s palette of materials, with brickwork detailing to match, which wraps around the extension and a grey zinc roof to mirror the muted tones of the existing weathered clay roof tiles. The form of the extension is distinctively modern in appearance with dramatic funnelled roof pitches and glazed lanterns above, drawing lots natural light down into a double height space below.
We look forward to seeing this project on site in the new year, please keep an eye on our twitter feed @MOOiArchitects for updates and photos as the project progresses.
